673 fishermen stranded in Iran will soon return to Tamil Nadu, fisheries minister Jayakumar says | Chennai News (

CHENNAI: Fisheries minister D Jayakumar on Thursday said 673 fishermen from Tamil Nadu who are stranded in Iran would be brought back to the state soon. They would be ferried to the Tuticorin port in a special ship from Iran.
Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami wrote a letter to the external affairs ministry requesting it to bring back the stranded Tamil fishermen with the help of the authorities in the Indian embassy in Iran. Following this, the officials from the Indian embassy approached the fishermen, conducted medical checks and extended necessary assistance to them, he said.
These fishermen, who had gone to Iran to work as contract labourers, were stuck in that country in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“A ship has left India for Iran to bring back these fishermen,” he said.
