It focuses on cutting taxes, mainly for households that earn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/big-beautiful-bill-tax-cuts-by-income-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US$217,000 or more each year<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/armedservices.house.gov\/legislation\/one-big-beautiful-bill.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing funding<\/a> for military and border security and revamping social programs. <\/p>\n<p>Republicans tout it as providing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/2025\/07\/02\/the-one-big-beautiful-bill-is-an-economic-lifeline-for-working-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an economic lifeline for working families<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/03\/nx-s1-5454841\/house-republicans-trump-tax-bill-medicaid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laying a key cornerstone of America\u2019s new golden age<\/a>.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Democrat lawmakers argue that, in reality, Trump\u2019s act \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-budget.house.gov\/resources\/fact-sheet\/trumps-big-bill-billionaires-steals-poor-give-ultra-rich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steals from the poor to give to the ultra-rich<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The act is estimated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/02\/nx-s1-5454598\/the-gops-massive-bill-would-add-trillions-of-dollars-to-the-countrys-debt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase the country\u2019s debt by more than US$3 trillion<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/29\/us\/politics\/senate-bill-trump-cbo-score-debt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 10 years<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/07\/03\/opinion\/domestic-policy-bill-in-charts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">knocking more than 10 million people off Medicaid<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/06\/24\/what-the-data-says-about-medicaid\/#how-many-people-have-medicaid-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">41.4 million adults in the U.S.<\/a> receive Medicaid. And 49% of Medicaid recipients who voted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.morningconsult.com\/analysis\/2024-vote-medicaid-recipients-trump-harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 election backed<\/a> Trump.  <\/p>\n<p>While 94% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said in a May 2025 survey that they are worried Medicaid cuts will lead to more adults and children losing their health insurance, 44% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents expressed concern about this, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/poll-finding\/kff-health-tracking-poll-the-publics-views-of-funding-reductions-to-medicaid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KFF Health Tracking Poll<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Why, then, do Trump\u2019s Make America Great Again supporters \u2013 especially those who will be hit hard by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/federal-budget\/house-republican-reconciliation-bill-would-harm-rural-households\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cuts to food assistance programs and health care, including hospitals<\/a> \u2013 continue to support him even as he enacts policies that some think go <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/columnists\/juan-williams\/5387100-trumps-mega-bill-will-hurt-the-health-of-his-own-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against their interests<\/a>? Indeed, over 78% of Republicans or Republican-leaning voters say they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/16\/politics\/trump-megabill-one-big-beautiful-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support<\/a> the measure Trump signed. <\/p>\n<p>As an <a href=\"https:\/\/alexhinton.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anthropologist who studies MAGA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nyupress.org\/9781479808014\/it-can-happen-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American political culture<\/a>, I understand that many of the MAGA faithful believe that Trump is a once-in-a-lifetime leader who is catapulting the U.S. into a new golden age. <\/p>\n<p>Sure, their reasoning goes, bumps in the road are expected. But they think that most of the criticism of Trump and this latest bill is ultimately fake news spread by radical leftists who have what some call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-meaningful-life\/202409\/the-paradox-of-trump-derangement-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump Derangement Syndrome<\/a>, meaning anti-Trump hysteria.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"align-center zoomable\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/681276\/original\/file-20250721-79-3uoy1o.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"placeholder-container\" style=\"--aspect-ratio-percent:66.71087533156499%;--background-color:#2b314f\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An older man with white hair sits and holds up a larger piece of paper. To them, he is a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/i-went-to-cpac-as-an-anthropologist-to-understand-trumps-base-they-believe-more-than-ever-he-is-a-savior-224205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">savior<\/a> who can help ward off the threat of radical left socialism. They believe Trump\u2019s proclamation: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2016\/07\/trump-rnc-speech-alone-fix-it\/492557\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I alone can fix it<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Some see Trump\u2019s survival of an assassination attempt on July 13, 2024, as evidence he is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/07\/13\/trump-butler-shooting-religion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">divinely chosen<\/a> to lead the country. Trump himself claimed during his second inaugural address, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/remarks\/2025\/01\/the-inaugural-address\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I was saved by God to make America great again<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>As I have repeatedly observed firsthand at Trump rallies and MAGA gatherings and heard in my conversations with Trump supporters, many Trump supporters \u2013 even those whom Democrats contend will be hurt by the bill \u2013 see the bill as a key step to making America great again. Doing so will not be easy and may cause some pain. <\/p>\n<p>But as Trump himself has noted about policies such as tariffs, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video\/politics\/trump-on-tariffs-sometimes-you-have-to-take-medicine\/2025\/04\/07\/b1a98b78-5aaa-415b-bb44-4e3f3276b314_video.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Fake news!\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Even if the bill may cause some short-term pain, MAGA stalwarts contend, the apocalyptic claims of critics of massive health cuts are <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ATJackson47\/status\/1940902393488814436\">hoaxes spread by the radical left media<\/a>. White House National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett, for example, dubbed the Medicare cut claims \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/kevin-hassett-medicare-trump-big-beautiful-bill-face-the-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a big fake news story<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This view, based on my research and observations, is unsurprising. Trump has been pushing the \u201cfake news conspiracy\u201d theory, which holds that the media is part of the deep state, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-election\/trump-fake-news-counter-history-b732873.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since his first term<\/a>. He even dubbed the press \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/437610-trump-calls-press-the-enemy-of-the-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enemy of the people<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s fake news rhetorical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/fox-host-says-fake-news-204858130.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strategy has been successful<\/a> in helping him maintain support. Trump supporters take it for granted that negative news coverage of the president is most likely fake news. <\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration frequently invokes this conspiracy theory, including statements with headlines like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2025\/04\/100-days-of-hoaxes-cutting-through-the-fake-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 Days of HOAXES: Cutting Through the Fake News<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House is taking the same approach with the new legislation. For the most part, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/campaign\/5397639-trump-is-crushing-it-but-the-gop-can-still-blow-2026-and-2028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump has been \u201ccrushing it\u201d while putting \u201c\u2018W\u2019 after \u2018W\u2019 on the board<\/a>.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>From their perspective, Trump has assembled an <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/trumps-all-star-cabinet-makes-history-ep-459\/id1701280578?i=1000709409403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all-star Cabinet<\/a> team that is implementing key pillars of the MAGA agenda, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/01\/podcasts\/the-daily\/steve-bannon-interview-maga.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restricting immigration, blocking unfair trade and avoiding drawn-out wars<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6375346802112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump supporters<\/a> underscore the president\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/04\/us\/trump-policy-bill-iran-israel-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accomplishments<\/a> on immigration. Attempted unauthorized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/100-days-of-immigration-under-the-second-trump-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">border crossings of migrants have plummeted<\/a> in 2025, amid a rise in arrests of immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur message is clear,\u201d stated Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/07\/22\/ice-arrests-worst-worst-criminal-illegal-aliens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the United States<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/gas-prices-lowest-level-4-years-ahead-fourth\/story?id=123445430\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gas prices are also down<\/a>. Trump has followed through on his pledge to supporters to purge what he calls the deep state, by downsizing or gutting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/interactive\/2025\/white-house-budget-federal-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entire government departments and agencies<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has clamped down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/06\/07\/college-universities-fractured-trump-resistance-00392106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">woke universities<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/trump-orders-a-plan-to-close-education-department-an-anthropologist-who-studies-maga-explains-4-reasons-why-trump-and-his-supporters-want-to-eliminate-it-248818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brainwash<\/a> students, as MAGA supporters see it. <\/p>\n<p>He withheld funding from the University of Pennsylvania until it agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/01\/us\/penn-title-ix-transgender-swimmer-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban transgender women<\/a> from playing on women\u2019s sports teams. Trump also cut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/11\/nyregion\/columbia-university-trump-deal-antisemitism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$400 million in funding<\/a> for Columbia University because the administration said it did not sufficiently protect Jewish students from harassment during Palestinian rights protests.  <\/p>\n<p>And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-netanyahu-nobel-prize-peace-544b703c161c13d9e14f1529df8a2669\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> in July for his diplomatic work in the Middle East. <\/p>\n<p>Recounting Trump\u2019s foreign policy achievements, one conservative commentator gushed that Trump \u201cpromised we would win so much we\u2019d get tired of winning. Instead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/07\/17\/donald-trump-achievements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the wins keep coming<\/a> \u2013 and America isn\u2019t tired at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Trumpism = Trump<\/h2>\n<p>Yet, Trump faces challenges.<\/p>\n<p>A June 2025 KFF Health Tracking Poll found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/poll-finding\/kff-health-tracking-poll-views-of-the-one-big-beautiful-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support for the new legislation decreased<\/a> when people were informed about its negative health care impact, for example. <\/p>\n<p>Republicans could also face backlash in 2028 after the full impact of the act <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/trump-agenda-bill-provisions-timeline-vis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">takes effect<\/a> and people lose health insurance and other public benefits. <\/p>\n<p>Regardless, I believe MAGA faithful will likely continue to support Trump. <\/p>\n<p>They may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/steve-bannon-trump-big-beautiful-bill-2076287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argue over parts of his bill<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/06\/20\/nx-s1-5439184\/maga-divide-trump-strike-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">airstrikes on Iran<\/a> or the release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/07\/12\/turning-point-usa-conference-concerns-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Epstein files<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, in the end, they will circle the wagons around Trump for a simple reason. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/MAGA-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump created the MAGA movement<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/08\/1079191067\/how-did-the-republican-party-become-the-party-of-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dominates the Republican Party<\/a>.
