But exactly how many people were there depends on whom you ask.<\/p>\n<p>Police put it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/clydnvw1dg5o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at about 90,000<\/a>. Organisers claimed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2025\/8\/4\/headlines\/as_many_as_300k_people_march_across_sydney_harbour_bridge_to_protest_israels_genocide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 300,000<\/a>. Regimes and revolutions can use crowd sizes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-02-12\/iran-gives-the-us-the-bird-as-revolution-turns-40\/10802038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as a propaganda tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why there are often strong incentives to inflate \u2013 or deflate \u2013 the numbers.<\/p>\n<p>But crowd estimates are also important for safety reasons. Underestimating can leave infrastructure and logistics unprepared, sometimes leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Love_Parade_disaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catastrophic crowd crushes<\/a>. Overestimating can result in unnecessary restrictions, closures, or even cancellations.<\/p>\n<h2>How are crowd sizes estimated?<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s no single way to count crowds. Experts choose from a toolbox of methods, each suited to different settings and each with its own blind spots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manual visual estimation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The oldest method is also the simplest: estimate the density (people per square metre) in a few sample patches of the crowd (often inferred from aerial images), then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=boOWZXZXINU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiply by the total area occupied<\/a>. In theory, straightforward; in practice, riddled with problems. <\/p>\n<p>Human observers (even experienced ones) <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0894439317726510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggle to distinguish<\/a> between, say, two, three, or four people per square metre. Crowd density is rarely a round number, but as human observers we often tend to infer whole density numbers from the scene. <\/p>\n<p>Plus, crowd density is rarely uniform: people bunch near focal points and leave gaps elsewhere. So, extrapolating from a sample can lead to very misleading estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Errors also creep in from misjudging the physical size of the sampled area or overlooking how much of the total space is actually usable. These misjudgements can lead to completely different counts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Computer vision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CCTV, aerial photos and drone imagery allow automated counting using <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.engappai.2015.01.007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">image processing techniques<\/a>. These range from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pae_8_eciE0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">texture-based methods<\/a> that work best for low- to medium-density crowds, to object detection models that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vWa0nCZiE6A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">locate individual heads or bodies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These can be quite accurate in open spaces with clear sight lines. But shadows, poor lighting, poor weather conditions, obstacles and occlusion in dense gatherings can compromise their accuracy.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><iframe title=\"Large crowd estimations using CVEDIA-RT [2022.10.0]\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vWa0nCZiE6A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>Wireless sensing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Crowd sizes <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0894439317726510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can also be inferred<\/a> using unique wifi or Bluetooth <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.comcom.2024.07.010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signals from smartphones<\/a>, or mobile tower activity (how many phones were making calls, texts and using data in an area). These methods work well for large, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F9_8ImWeeuc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dispersed, or moving crowds<\/a>, and can be particularly useful where aerial imagery is impractical.<\/p>\n<p>But they depend on people carrying devices, having them switched on, and having location functions enabled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Modern crowd counting systems often use AI, especially a type called <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2003.12783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convolutional neural networks<\/a>. These systems create \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I-JFwp0pK50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">density maps<\/a>\u201d from images, showing where people are and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/15472450.2020.1746909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how tightly packed they are<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They can also correct for perspective \u2013 for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oDSD4PnvRgQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognising that people farther from the camera look smaller<\/a> \u2013 and adjust for changes in density across the scene. This can <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/3210240.3210320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significantly reduce error<\/a>, compared to wifi alone.<\/p>\n<p>But several factors further complicate things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting<\/strong> can change everything. Open spaces are easier to measure than narrow streets. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ahh9kLmI7Cs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Static crowds<\/a> are simpler than <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/20YIWPhUlIA?si=9myB915BWPlFhP1r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moving marches<\/a>. Dense, uniform gatherings are easier to estimate than patchy ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timing<\/strong> plays a big role. Numbers change as people arrive, leave, or move between spaces. We naturally tend to focus on the most animated and tightly packed parts of a crowd. This \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0956797620970561\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crowd emotion amplification effect<\/a>\u201d makes the gathering feel larger and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0956797620970561\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more charged than it really is<\/a>. People tend to overestimate the size or emotional intensity of the crowd, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.effectiveliving.com.au\/myfootyfandom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially when they are part of it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The bottom line on crowd sizes<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s rarely a single, correct crowd size estimate; at best, we should expect a range.<\/p>\n<p>Discrepancies are not necessarily a sign of bad faith. They often reflect the limits of the data and the methods used. The most reliable counts come from matching the method to the event\u2019s setting and being transparent about how the figure was reached.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, crowd size estimation is part science, part art. Knowing its limits should help us treat estimates with healthy scepticism and recognise that differences in reporting are not necessarily a sign of dishonesty.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you\u2019re in a stadium, try guessing the attendance before the official number flashes up on the scoreboard. Chances are, your estimate will be off. That gap is a reminder that crowd size controversies are as much about human perception as they are about motives.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re a regular, try doing it every time; over time, your guesses will likely get more accurate.
