Female activists in the UK recently staged a “citizens’ arrest” of Anglian Water CEO Mark Thurston at Coulsdon South railway station. The activists, forming a circle around Thurston to prevent him from traveling, accused him of “public nuisance” related to environmental damage caused by sewage spills. A video circulating online captured the moment a woman with a buzz cut informed Thurston of the arrest, to which he responded that he was simply trying to get to work.
The British Transport Police confirmed they were called to the scene on October 15th around 7am following reports of a man being prevented from traveling. Upon arrival, officers found the situation and the activists dispersed without further incident. This incident highlights the growing public concern and activist pressure surrounding water companies’ environmental practices, particularly regarding sewage discharge into UK waterways. Recent data from the Environment Agency indicates that sewage spills remain a significant issue, prompting increased scrutiny and direct action from environmental groups.
