Woman Driver Intentionally Hits NYPD Officer

Sahara Dula, 25, received a two-year prison sentence after intentionally hitting NYPD Officer Ruchiran Dias with her vehicle. Dula admitted to investigators that she struck the officer because “he wouldn’t move” when she wanted to proceed straight. In a statement to investigators, Dula expressed animosity towards law enforcement, stating her actions were intended as a “lesson” to the officer. The incident has sparked controversy, particularly regarding the leniency of the sentence in light of the potential for fatal consequences.

Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), has publicly criticized the sentence, deeming it insufficient. Hendry emphasized the severity of the crime, pointing out that Dula’s actions could have resulted in the officer’s death. The sentencing was handed down by Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Melissa T. Lewis. The case highlights the ongoing debate surrounding appropriate sentencing for crimes against law enforcement and the perceived risks officers face in the line of duty.
