Iranians in Afghanistan: a history

Afghans and Iranians share the Persian language, written as Dari in Afghanistan. Herat carries a long Persianate heritage. About 1.9 million Afghans returned from Iran in 2025, most of them by deportation, according to UNHCR (as of May 2026).
