נשיא ארה”ב ג’ו ביידן אמר אתמול (שישי) כי הוא “נפעם” מההפגנות ההמוניות באיראן, ושארה”ב עומדת לצד “הנשים האמיצות” במדינה. ביידן אמר את הדברים במכללה בעיר אירווין בקליפורניה, במהלך נאום מול מפגינים שהניפו שלטים שעליהם נכתב “לשחרר את איראן”.
איראן חווה את גל ההפגנות הגדול ביותר במדינה מזה שנים, זאת בעקבות מותה של מהסא אמיני בת ה-22, לאחר שנעצרה על ידי משטרת המוסר במדינה, בגין אי עטיית חיג’אב. הפגנות דומות נערכות בערים ברחבי העולם. הדיווחים אודות מספר ההרוגים אינם אחידים, ונעים בין 100 ל-200. לפי ארגון זכויות אדם איראני, למעלה מ-100 בני אדם נהרגו מאז שהחל גל ההפגנות במדינה. המחאות נמשכו על אף “הדיכוי האכזרי והבלתי פוסק”, כך כינה זאת ארגון אמנסטי, שכלל “מתקפה על ילדים שהפגינו” – מה שהוביל למותם של 23 קטינים.
