Scripts and fonts

How the platform writes, shows and searches every language it serves. Every font is self-hosted and openly licensed.

01The alphabets

Each with its chart, its letters, its digits and the languages written in it.

02Each language and the fonts that draw it

Checked at every build: a language whose letters a shipped font cannot draw stops the build.

03The fonts

  • Latin, Cyrillic and Greek: IBM Plex Sans and Mono, with Noto Sans for Kurdish Cyrillic letters.
  • Persian, Arabic, Dari and South Azerbaijani: Vazirmatn for text, Estedad for headings.

  • Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, Devanagari, Syriac and Mandaic: Noto Sans for each script.
  • Chinese, Japanese and Korean: the reader’s own system fonts.
  • All under the SIL Open Font License. No page asks a third party for a font.

04Standards

05Rules the platform follows

  • Persian keeps the zero-width non-joiner (U+200C) in words such as می‌روم
  • Search treats Arabic and Persian forms of kaf and yeh as the same letter
  • Dates show the Solar Hijri calendar alongside the Gregorian
  • Machine translation is only a labelled reading aid
  • Low-resource languages get human translation only
