Pregnancy Screening & Down Syndrome: Raising Awareness in October

October marks Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a crucial time to promote understanding and advocate for the rights and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome. While over 400,000 people in the U.S. live with Down syndrome, a condition occurring in approximately one in every 700 births due to an extra copy of chromosome 21, prenatal testing and subsequent decisions remain a complex and sensitive issue. Studies suggest that termination rates following a Down syndrome diagnosis during pregnancy are significant, with estimates ranging from 67% to 85% in the United States and as high as 90% in the United Kingdom. Some advocacy groups allege that expectant mothers may face undue pressure from medical professionals to consider abortion after such a diagnosis.

This awareness month serves as a vital platform to challenge societal biases and promote the inherent worth and potential of individuals with Down syndrome. While most experience some degree of cognitive delay, they are capable of leading fulfilling and productive lives within their communities. Advocates emphasize the need for comprehensive support systems, inclusive education, and accessible healthcare to ensure these individuals can thrive. As underscored by the biblical passage in John 9:1-3, disability should not be viewed as a consequence of sin but rather as an opportunity for God’s work to be displayed, emphasizing the value and dignity of every human life.
