U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Faces Charges of $5 Million Theft

U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat, has been charged with allegedly stealing $5 million in FEMA funds, according to federal prosecutors. The charges stem from a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract awarded to her family’s healthcare company, where she and her brother allegedly received a $5 million overpayment. Prosecutors allege that Cherfilus-McCormick and her co-conspirators conspired to steal the funds, routing them through multiple accounts to obscure their origin.

The misappropriated funds were allegedly used for personal benefit and her 2021 congressional campaign, with false claims made regarding political spending and other personal expenses as business deductions. Prosecutors further allege that charitable contributions were inflated to reduce tax obligations. Former Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the alleged actions as a “selfish, cynical crime,” emphasizing that no one is above the law and vowing to deliver justice. A CBS 12 report from February 2025 covered the unfolding legal developments.
