Political refugees arrived in the 1980s and settled in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Uppsala. Sweden has a strong Persian literary and publishing scene. Hamid Nouri was convicted in Sweden in 2022 for crimes linked to the 1988 executions, and released in a prisoner exchange in 2024.
